The Gate of East-West Passage Opens

Once again after last year’s success, between 18-21 September 2008 in Pécs, Hungary we organize East-West Passage with an even wider range of programmes. The happening which opens gates to the Balkan will comprise world music gigs and an interdisciplinar conference. On this site we are having you informed… Stay tuned!

Welcome

The East-West Passage aims year by year to extend an ever-broadening perspective of the many-faceted culture of the Balkans. The intercultural patchwork made up from concerts, contemporary art exhibitions and activities, delivered conference papers, philosophical, literary and theoretical workshop conversations and open dialogues between artists and intellectuals contribute to more than the idea expressed in the “Pécs as a cultural gateway to the Balkans” Pécs 2010 – Cultural Capital of Europe programme. As a unique initiative from the European perspective it can create an exceptional meeting, a long overdue opportunity for cultural and artistic discourse. It provides a forum for dialogue, an indispensable condition for the transformation of Pécs into an important European gateway city and a space for mediation.

The fusing of the two striking arcs making up the events of the East-West Passage, the Balkan World Music Festival and the “Meeting at the Balkan Gateway” International, Interdisciplinary Conference provides an opportunity to more widely reinterpret current concepts of what “Balkan” means, giving new hues. Enjoyment and information are simultaneously offered in order that the Balkans be constructed in public awareness as a cultural, literary, philosophical, political and artistic space, a space for cultural osmosis and unbroken interaction among the various communities.
